The Greek Conservative Mind
Dr. Thomas Fleming
The ancient Greeks liberated themselves from the shackles of religion and tradition to pursue a dream of democracy, equality, and human rights. Right? Wrong. We do well to remember the Greeks as they really were: their aristocratic pursuit of virtue, their general disdain for democracy, and their strong attachments to family and religion.
"The Greek Conservcative Mind" is taught by Dr. Thomas Fleming, who is regarded as a leading authority on Greek lyric verse. Originally presented in the fall of 2004 as a lecture series at the Institute, the course now comprises 16 recorded lectures and a study guide with suggested readings, key terms, and discussion questions. The civilization of Europe and the United States is a legacy of ancient Greece and Rome, and the study of the history and literature of these civilizations is the foundation of any serious education.
